Vision Problems Can Contribute To Reading Problems

You are using several different vision skills to read this. But having 20/20 eyesight doesn't guarantee you can see the words clearly or easily. It simply means you can see clearly at a distance. To read, you need to see clearly up close, to move your eyes smoothly across a page and to use your two eyes together.

Many children with reading problems have 20/20 eyesight but lack some of the vision skills needed for reading. Children with learning-related vision problems may have blurred vision up close or they may see double. Their eyes may move slowly and haltingly across the page, making it difficult for them to keep their place and draw meaning from the words. Or their eyes might jump across the page, missing words. Some children may reverse letters or words. Others may have difficulty changing eye focus easily and quickly when looking from their book to the chalkboard and back.

Children with reading problems need to have a thorough vision examination from an optometrist with experience in diagnosing and treating learning-related vision problems. If a problem exists, treatment usually involves vision therapy, a program of prescribed visual tasks directed at improving specific vision skills, and sometimes also glasses. When the vision problem is solved, the child is better able to respond to remedial reading programs and catch up to his or her age level of reading.

Children will not outgrow a learning-related vision problem. Therefore, the earlier it is diagnosed and treated the better.
