Prevent Eye Accidents At Home *Nearly 110,000 people suffer eye injuries in home accidents every year, says the American Optometric Association. *Many household cleaning chores, workshop tasks and yard work expose the eyes to: -- caustic chemicals -- sawdust -- flying chips of wood, stone, nails or bolts -- ceiling tile staples -- protruding wire -- branches of trees and shrubs *To prevent home eye accidents, wear safety goggles that meet the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Z87.1 standard when using power tools, handling chemicals or doing other eye hazardous chores. Buy them at hardware and hobby stores. *If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you still need to wear safety goggles over them because neither offers adequate protection in eye hazardous situations. If you have questions about safety eyewear, ask your optometrist. *Also be sure to maintain good vision by seeing your optometrist every year or two for a thorough eye examination. Changes in vision are subtle and often go unnoticed. It could be that undetected vision problems are the real cause of: -- smashed thumbs -- uneven wallpaper -- mistakes in measuring -- or misread instructions Copyright 1994-1996, American Optometic Association ![]() "We Really Care About Your Family's Eyes!" |
